NEW YORK, USA – This National Coffee Day, Nespresso and mental health nonprofit Project Healthy Minds came together to shed light on the profound connection between morning rituals, coffee habits, and mental wellbeing. A new omnibus survey with Kantar exploring how Americans start their day reveals insights into the significance of a mindful morning routine, and the role that coffee can play in creating a positive foundation for the day ahead.
The survey reveals coffee’s vital role in the lives of Americans, with more than 90% saying their morning routine impacts their mental wellness for the rest of the day, and 77% of respondents naming coffee a definitive part of their morning routines.
When asked why coffee is central to their morning routine, 33% say to kickstart focus and mental clarity, while a third say it enhances energy levels and fuels motivation for the day ahead. A fourth of respondents say their morning coffee provides a key moment of mindfulness before diving into daily demands.
“At Nespresso, we believe that coffee is more than a beverage—and the survey results show just how universal the value of a cherished coffee moment is,” said Alfonso Gonzalez Loeschen, CEO, Nespresso North America. “This National Coffee Day, we are proud to collaborate with Project Healthy Minds to explore how the simple act of turning your coffee into a morning ritual can set the tone for a more mindful day, whether you’re fueling up for a busy day or seeking a quiet pause.”
The survey also found areas where Americans can create more intentional morning moments within busy routines, as the leading barrier to respondents dedicating more time to wellness-centered morning routines was a lack of time due to busy schedules.
Despite this challenge, 81% of respondents who allocate less than 30 minutes to their morning routines still include their morning coffee. However, 42% of respondents dedicate their limited morning time to scrolling through social media, nearly double the 23% who spend it meditating or engaging in quiet mindfulness. For those short on time, coffee can offer this brief yet meaningful opportunity to reset with quiet mindfulness, as 47% of Americans say their anxiety levels have increased in the past six months.
Phil Schermer, CEO and Founder, Project Healthy Minds, added: “This National Coffee Day, we’re thrilled to partner with Nespresso to highlight how simple daily rituals — like enjoying a cup of coffee — can support mental wellbeing. With nine in ten Americans saying their mornings shape their mental health, turning coffee into a small daily ritual is a simple step anyone can take.”
The survey also highlighted coffee’s pervasive cultural and generational appeal: Millennials (84%) and Gen Z (78%) were the most likely to make coffee a cornerstone of their mornings, while Baby Boomers were two times more likely than Gen Z to say including coffee in their morning routine is habit (53% vs 25%).
This National Coffee Day, Nespresso and Project Healthy Minds invite coffee lovers everywhere to set intentional routines that can pave the way for a healthier, happier day. Project Healthy Minds will host its fourth annual World Mental Health Day Festival on Friday, October 10 in New York City. As the world’s largest gathering on World Mental Health Day, the free, all-day event will feature influential voices discussing topics designed to reshape the future of mental health. Nespresso will be serving coffee throughout the day in its dedicated coffee lounge space and engaging attendees with a morning mantras exercise.
